Foreign Investment in DSE

Overall foreign participation in DSE during February 2018 fell 

compared to the previous month. Foreign investors were reluctant 

to build new equity positions in the face of index’s continued 

falling trend. Monthly net investment fell by 150.59% MoM, 

Total foreign turnover fell by 23.26% compared to January 

2018. The foreign investors reacted negatively to interest rates 

increasing, ongoing liquidity pressure in the banking system 

as well as potential BDT devaluation concerns. Net foreign 

investment went into negative for the first time in five months, 

with BDT 947mn net foreign sell. Foreign equity buys during the 

month fell by 41.12% compared to January while sell of foreign  

owned stocks remained at similar levels with 1.57% increase in 

MoM basis. The slowdown in fresh foreign equity buys came in 

line with decrease in market turnover, yet foreign participation 

remained a key source of activity in the market. Foreign turnover 

contributed a significant 11.47% of total market turnover for the 

month. 
The overseas investors bought shares worth BDT 3.93 billion, 

while they sold stocks of BDT 4.88 billion in February 2018. Total 

foreign turnover stood at BDT 8.81 billion, which was BDT 6.33 

billion in February 2017, up by 39.13% year-over-year, according 

to statistics available from DSE.
