A foreigner was allegedly caught in the act while a racket of ATM forgers withdrew Wednesday Tk 575,000 from three booths of Prime Bank in the capital, hot on the heels of Bangladesh Bank's offshore reserve heist.

The digital bank burglars pumped out the money from Elephant Road, Farmgate and Panthapath booths of the bank within a short time from 6.20am to 6.40am, said a Prime Bank official.

They drew Tk 310,000 from Panthapath booth, Tk 199,000 from Farmgate booth and Tk 66,000 from Elephant Road booth, he said.

He also said the scammers on 34 attempts used a total of 11 ATM cards of a Middle East-based foreign bank.

Meanwhile, law enforcers detained a foreign national with Tk 66,000 from the Elephant Road ATM booth during the morning misadventure for his alleged involvement in the skimming.

Rapid Action Battalion-2 (RAB-2) identified him as a Chinese national named Zou Jian Hui, 38, who was held from the Prime Bank ATM booth around 11.30am, said RAB-2 spokesman at a press briefing.

"The security guard at the ATM confined the foreigner inside the ATM booth having seen him taking so much time than usual and called on the bank authority," said the RAB official, adding that after getting informed RAB-2 and police rushed the spot to arrest the suspect.

He said Jian Hui withdrew a total of Tk 66,000 using two ATM cards of the Middle-Eastern foreign bank. He was under RAB-2 interrogation.
